Packaging

Berry Growers in Ontario are increasingly using sustainable forms of packaging to deliver their berries to consumers on their pick your own operations, farmers’ markets or in the produce section of your local grocery store.

The move towards sustainable packaging has been hastened with the 2019 Canadian government announcement of a ban on harmful, single-use plastic by 2021.

Fortunately, the Canadian packaging industry has been ahead of the curve in producing sustainable, environmentally friendly packaging, winning industry recognition internationally for their innovation.

CFK Canada, a food packaging company, took the bronze prize in the Fruit Logistica 2019 Innovation Awards held in Berlin. “CFK’s top-sealable, compostable, recyclable strawberry punnet won the prize against an impressive line-up of competitors from around the world. The punnet provides good protection for 350 to 400 grams of strawberries, ensuring a longer shelf life, and without the use of plastic.

“CKF is a Canadian company that provides food service and packaging products to customers throughout North America.  It offers pulp, foam, and RPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) products for use in retail, food service and food packaging. The company has operations in Langley and Delta, B.C., Rexdale, Ontario and Hantsport, N.S.”(CFK press release)

In October of 2019, the Kingsville, Ontario-based Mucci Farm was awarded the Best Sustainable Packaging at the Producing Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit Conference held in Anaheim, California. Mucci Farm won the award for their product, Simple Snack, a plastic-free, backyard compostable series of packaging.

The package is composed of a tray made from agricultural waste and the lidding film is made of sugar-cane and wood fibres using a process that emphasizes social and environmental responsibility.
